This AM broadcast radio has been fraught with challenges and solutions. It features a dial that is run via right angle gears to the tuning capacitor and the dial surface is at an angle to the cabinet floor where the capacitor is fastened. This not only dictated where the tuning shaft would be located but also how high off the floor the capacitor would have to be and how far back this tuning capacitor would have to be located in order for its gear to be installed. And it turned out that the back of the capacitor would extend beyond the back of the sets frame by 3/8”. To accommodate this issue a ½” back panel was used with a pocket routed into it to receive the back of the capacitor. The tuning glass bezel extends beyond the flat surfaces of the angled top/side panel so it had to be carefully fitted to it using guitar making techniques.
The design of this radio features a special viewing glass on the front panel and this required locating the tube as close as possible to that panel. A unique housing was constructed for the tube which was then securely fastened to the floor of the cabinet and was machined to expose as much of the tube as possible. Although the tube is not actually sitting inside the concave viewing glass it looks as though it is since it is so close to it. A beautiful Fairbanks-Morse dial face from 1938 is housed beneath a gorgeous convex glass crystal that really sets the radio off.
The tuning variable capacitor is a standard 365pF and the coil that makes up the tank is wound on an Amidon toroidal form using 175’46 litz wire to 170 uH. This was required since the variable trimmer capacitor is set at 40pH which couples the antenna to the tank. A mounting base was fabricated for the coil and it is mounted on the ceiling of the cabinet. A small amplifier and speaker were included for listening ease and enjoyment and the speakers grill was machined using a metal lathe and vertical mill and was then inlaid into the front of the set.
All wood used is black walnut that was stained, sealed and finished with multiple coats of nitro cellulose lacquer that I flatten here in my shop.
